1 Timothy

Timothy was the son of a Greek father and a Jewish mother from Lystra, raised on the Scriptures by his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois. Paul met him on his second journey and took him along, and for the rest of Paul’s life Timothy was his closest companion — “my own son in the faith.” When Paul wrote this letter, Timothy had been left in charge of the church at Ephesus, a young man leading older believers in a city where false teachers were already at work. 1 Timothy is Paul’s charge to him: guard sound doctrine, order the church’s worship and leadership, care for its members, and fight the good fight of faith.

This series reads 1 Timothy chapter by chapter, following this site’s studies of Paul’s letters from Romans to 2 Thessalonians — the first of the three pastoral letters, and the tenth epistle on the site. Its themes reach every church and every believer: the one Mediator between God and men, the mystery of godliness, warnings against a coming departure from the faith, and the contrast between those who would be rich and those who find that godliness with contentment is great gain.
