2 John

The Second Epistle of John is a single page, a short letter from “the elder unto the elect lady and her children.” Whether John was writing to a Christian mother and her family, or to a local church and its members under that figure, the message is the same. He rejoices that he has found some of her children “walking in truth,” and he repeats the command he received from the Lord at the beginning: “that we love one another.”

This study reads the whole letter in one article, following this site’s series on 1 John. It is 1 John in miniature: truth and love held together. Because “many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh,” John warns the household not to open its doors to anyone who brings another gospel. Love that welcomes everything, even error, is not the love of Christ.
