Moses recites the Ten Commandments a second time — not as a history lesson but as a live contract with the people standing in front of him. He reminds them that God spoke these words with His own voice and wrote them with His own hand, and then he lets slip something God said that day: a wish, almost an ache, that His people had a heart to match His law.

The LORD Talked With You Face To Face
“The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day. The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire.”
Deuteronomy 5:2-4
Most of the people listening were children, or unborn, when Sinai happened. Moses will not let them treat the covenant as their parents’ old arrangement: “with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.” Every generation has to take the covenant up for itself; an inherited faith that is never personally owned is not yet faith.
He Added No More
“These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.”
Deuteronomy 5:22
Two details mark the Ten Commandments off from everything else in the law. God spoke them aloud to the whole nation — “he added no more” — and God wrote them Himself, in stone. The other statutes came through Moses on parchment. These ten, and only these, went into the ark. Scripture keeps them in a category of their own, and so should we.
O That There Were Such An Heart In Them
“O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!”

This is one of the most revealing sentences God ever spoke about Himself. The law was never the problem; the heart was. God is not indifferent to whether His people obey — He longs for it, for their sake and their children’s. And the longing is not left hanging: the same book promises the answer, “the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart” (Deuteronomy 30:6), and the prophets carry it forward — “a new heart also will I give you” (Ezekiel 36:26).
That It May Be Well With You
“Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.”
Deuteronomy 5:33
The commandments are handed over as a description of the good life, not a tax on it. “That ye may live… that it may be well with you” is the refrain of the whole book. God’s law is the maker’s instructions for the thing He made. The next chapter distils it all into one command, and one confession: Hear, O Israel.
