Between the dream at Gibeon and the building of the temple, two chapters of prosperity. Solomon organizes the kingdom; the people are “many, as the sand which is by the sea,” “eating and drinking, and making merry”; every household sits “under his vine and under his fig tree.” His wisdom becomes an international attraction — three thousand proverbs, a thousand songs, kings sending to hear him. And with the land finally at rest, he sends to Hiram of Tyre for cedar: it is time to build.

Every Man Under His Vine And Under His Fig Tree
“Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry… And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon.”
1 Kings 4:20-25
“Under his vine and fig tree” becomes the Bible’s shorthand for settled peace — the prophets pick it up as a picture of the age to come (Micah 4:4, Zechariah 3:10). For a moment Israel actually lives it: numerous, safe, prosperous, from one end of the land to the other. This is the covenant blessing working exactly as promised. The danger of a golden age is that it starts to feel self-sustaining.
Solomon Was Wiser Than All Men
“And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore… And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five… And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.”
1 Kings 4:29-34
The wisdom is a gift — “God gave Solomon” — and for now he uses it the way it was meant, pouring it out. It was the wide sharing of these heaven-born principles, with God recognised as the One all praise belongs to, that made the early reign a time of moral uplift and not just material wealth. The gift blesses others as long as its holder keeps giving it away.

The LORD My God Hath Given Me Rest On Every Side
“Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side… But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent. And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father.”
1 Kings 5:3-5
Solomon knows the temple is not his own idea — it was David’s lifelong plan, and God’s word to David (2 Samuel 7:13). His job is to carry out an assignment already given. The rest David never had, Solomon has been handed, and he reads it correctly: the peace is for a purpose. Rest is given so that something can be built with it.
Blessed Be The LORD This Day
“And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people… And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.”
1 Kings 5:7-12
Hiram, a pagan king of Tyre, blesses the LORD when he hears Solomon’s plan — exactly the effect Israel was meant to have on the nations (Deuteronomy 4:6). Thirty thousand men are levied for Lebanon in shifts, stone is quarried, timber floated down the coast. And on the mountain the work goes up in silence: “there was neither hammer nor ax nor any tool of iron heard in the house.” The stones arrive finished; the noise of the work is kept away from the place of worship.
