Jehu finishes the job. Ahab’s seventy sons are beheaded and their heads stacked at the gate of Jezreel; the last of the royal house and its priests are cut down. Then he picks up Jehonadab — “is thine heart right?” — and rides him into a masterpiece of a trap: a great feast for Baal, every priest and worshipper in the kingdom summoned on pain of death, robed, herded into the temple, and killed to a man. Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel — and then went home to Bethel and Dan, where the golden calves still stood.

Come With Me, And See My Zeal For The LORD
“And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him ride in his chariot.”
2 Kings 10:15-16
Jehonadab is the founder of the Rechabites, a clan famous for its plain, disciplined, tent-dwelling separation from Canaanite life (Jeremiah 35). Jehu wants him visibly on the chariot — a byword for godly rigor lending its name to the purge. “Come and see my zeal for the LORD” is the sentence of a man performing his righteousness for an audience.
The killing that follows is real obedience — “according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to Elijah” — and the chapter never pretends otherwise. But zeal that needs a witness in the passenger seat is already a half-step from zeal for its own sake. Keep the phrase in mind for the last paragraph.
I Have A Great Sacrifice To Do To Baal
“And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much. Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal. And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.”

The lie is elegant. Jehu poses as the most enthusiastic Baal worshipper Israel has ever had, and calls a national festival — attendance compulsory. Every priest, prophet, and devotee in the country comes, because staying home is a death sentence and no one yet knows which kind of death is being handed out. They fill the temple wall to wall. Jehu even has vestments issued, so that when the guards go in there is no mistaking a worshipper for a bystander.
It works completely, and there is something chilling about how well it works. The instrument of God’s judgment here is a man with a real gift for deception, using it in a cause that happens to be righteous.
Thus Jehu Destroyed Baal Out Of Israel
“And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them. And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day. Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.”

Organized Baal worship in the northern kingdom ends here, in one afternoon. The temple that Ahab built for Jezebel’s god is torn down and turned into a public latrine — the deliberate final insult. On the surface this is the reformation Elijah spent his life demanding.
God credits it: the next verses record that Jehu’s line will hold the throne to the fourth generation for “executing that which is right in mine eyes.” Obedience is obedience, and God keeps His word about it even when the man is what Jehu is.
“‘All the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests’ dwelling at the center of Baal worship near Samaria, were put to the sword. The idolatrous images were broken down and burned, and the temple of Baal was laid in ruins. ‘Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.’”

Jehu Took No Heed To Walk In The Law
“Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Beth-el, and that were in Dan. And the LORD said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel. But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.”

Jehu tore down the god his rivals worshipped and kept the state religion his dynasty needed. The golden calves at Bethel and Dan were Jeroboam’s invention precisely so northerners would not go up to Jerusalem; a king who wants a separate kingdom keeps them. His zeal reached exactly as far as his interests did.
“Come and see my zeal for the LORD” turns out to have been the honest confession after all: a display, aimed at the parts of idolatry that were also his political enemies, stopping cold where obedience would have cost him something. And that same reign is when “the LORD began to cut Israel short” — Hazael starts taking the land east of the Jordan. A reformation that only removes what is convenient to remove does not reverse a nation’s decline; it just changes the label on it.
