The LORD Reigneth

This is a short, five-verse psalm that pictures God’s rule the way an ancient reader would have pictured the most frightening thing they knew — a flood, rising water, waves lifting their voice — and then simply states that none of it can actually move Him.

The LORD Reigneth

“The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.”

Psalm 93:1

“Girded himself” describes deliberate preparation, the way a soldier or worker would tie up loose garments before real action — God’s strength here is pictured as actively engaged, not passively displayed.

“Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.”

Psalm 93:2

This is not a throne recently won or newly occupied — its stability rests entirely on how long it has already stood, a rule with no beginning the psalm can even point to.

The Floods Have Lifted Up Their Voice

“The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.”

Psalm 93:3-4

“Lifted up” repeats three times in a single verse, building the sense of rising danger — and then the very next verse simply declares God’s superiority without any drawn-out battle description. The contest is stated, not staged.

Holiness Becometh Thine House

“Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.”

Psalm 93:5

The psalm makes an unexpected turn in its final line — from cosmic imagery, floods and waves and an unshaken throne, to something as quiet and practical as holiness in a house. The same God whose majesty stills the sea also cares about what fits His own dwelling.
