Zephaniah

Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of good King Josiah, likely early in the reforms that would tear down Judah’s idols and restore true worship — a reminder that reform, however sincere, does not erase decades of accumulated compromise overnight. His three chapters open with some of the most sweeping judgment language in the Old Testament: God will “utterly consume all things from off the land.”

Ellen White reads Zephaniah’s opening chapter as speaking “with equal force” to the judgments still ahead at the second advent — the same interpretive move she makes with Habakkuk in the chapter immediately before this one in her own writings. But the book does not end in wrath. Its closing verses contain one of Scripture’s most tender pictures of God: not a distant judge, but a Father who “will rejoice over thee with joy” and “joy over thee with singing.” This series reads Zephaniah chapter by chapter.
