Paul just spent a whole chapter distinguishing spiritual wisdom from the natural man’s blindness to it — and now turns that same distinction directly on the Corinthians themselves. They are baptized believers, yet Paul still cannot speak to them as spiritual people, only as babies still on milk, because their own envying and strife prove it. From there the chapter widens into two of its most quoted images: ministers as nothing more than fellow-laborers planting and watering while God alone gives the increase, and the church itself as a building with only one foundation anyone can ever lay.

As Unto Carnal, Even As Unto Babes
“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.”
1 Corinthians 3:1-2
Chapter 2 closed by declaring that believers “have the mind of Christ.” Chapter 3 opens by admitting that this particular church has done very little to show it. Milk, not meat — not because Paul withheld the deeper truths on purpose, but because their own spiritual condition had never advanced far enough to receive them.
“For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?”

Paul’s evidence for “ye are yet carnal” is not some private vice uncovered behind closed doors — it is the exact same party spirit chapter 1 already described in public. Immaturity, in this letter, is measured less by what people believe than by how they treat each other over what they believe.
God Gave The Increase
“Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”
1 Corinthians 3:5-6
Paul answers his own rhetorical question by immediately shrinking himself and Apollos down to size — “ministers,” servants, nothing grander than that. Planting and watering are real, necessary labor, but neither one can make a single seed actually grow. That power belonged to God alone in Genesis 1 and it belongs to Him alone here.
“So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.”

“Are one” quietly dissolves the very rivalry the Corinthians had built up between Paul’s camp and Apollos’s camp — two workers on the same task cannot rank against each other when the outcome never depended on either one of them in the first place. Reward is still real, still personal, still tied to labor; it is simply never tied to whose name gets remembered for it.
“For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.”

Verse 9 pivots the whole metaphor from field to structure in a single breath — “husbandry” (farmland) becomes “building” without any warning, because Paul is about to spend the rest of the chapter on the second image. Notice, too, whose the church actually is in both halves of the verse: not Paul’s field, not Apollos’s building, but God’s, twice over.
Other Foundation Can No Man Lay
“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:10-11
“It was with the word of God that the apostles met the false theories of their day, saying, ‘Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid.’”

“Other foundation can no man lay” is not a suggestion about which foundation is best; it is a flat statement that no alternative even exists to be compared. A masterbuilder can be wise or careless about what gets built on top, but the foundation itself was never his to choose — it was already laid before he arrived.
“Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.”

Six materials, sorted into two obvious categories — gold, silver, and precious stones can survive fire; wood, hay, and stubble cannot. The foundation is fixed and identical for every builder, but what gets stacked on top of it is not, and only one test will ever reveal which is which.

“We are to bring to the foundation material that will stand the test of fire — gold, silver, and precious stones. … To those who thus build for God, Paul speaks words of encouragement and warning: ‘If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.’”

This is one of the more sobering distinctions in the whole letter: a builder’s own salvation and the survival of his particular work turn out to be two separate questions. A person can be genuinely saved, “yet so as by fire,” while everything they personally contributed to the building burns away to nothing — sobering not because salvation is ever in doubt for the faithful, but because a wasted life’s labor is a real and permanent loss even so.

The building image narrows here from a structure Paul and Apollos help construct to a temple the whole congregation collectively is — not a metaphor for individual bodies yet (that comes later, in chapter 6), but for the corporate church itself as God’s dwelling place. Whoever brings division, envy, and strife into that temple, this verse warns, is not merely making an internal management mistake; they are defiling something holy.
Ye Are Christ’s, And Christ Is God’s
“Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”
1 Corinthians 3:18-19
This is the same reversal chapter 1 already ran through once — the cross as foolishness that is actually wisdom, and wisdom that is actually foolishness — now aimed squarely at anyone in Corinth still quietly proud of their own worldly-wise reputation. “Become a fool” is not an insult; it is the one door back into the wisdom this letter has been describing all along.

“All things are yours” turns the whole factional argument on its head one more time. The Corinthians had been dividing themselves up as though they belonged to Paul, or to Apollos, or to Cephas — and Paul answers that it actually runs the other direction entirely: Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, the present, the future, all of it belongs to them, because of whose they themselves already are.

Six words end the chapter and, in effect, end the entire argument that opened it. A church quarreling over which human name deserves its loyalty has, in the space of one short sentence, been shown a chain of belonging that leaves no room for a fourth link. Paul belongs to no faction because Paul himself belongs to Christ, and Christ belongs to God — a foundation, once again, that no man laid and no man can rearrange.
