Four hundred and eighty years after the exodus, in the fourth year of his reign, Solomon begins the temple. Seven years in the building; no tool of iron heard on the site; the whole interior overlaid with gold. God speaks to him in the middle of it, with a condition attached. And then thirteen years — nearly twice as long — on Solomon’s own palace next door.

Neither Hammer Nor Axe Nor Any Tool Of Iron Heard
“In the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel… he began to build the house of the LORD… And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.”
1 Kings 6:1-7
Every stone was cut and shaped at the quarry and carried up ready to set, so the temple rose in silence. Ellen White reads the finished house as an emblem of “the living church of God on earth, which through the ages has been building in accordance with the divine pattern” — each stone “polished after the similitude of a palace” before it takes its place. The shaping happens out of sight, before the stone is built in.

If Thou Wilt Walk In My Statutes
“Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father: And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.”
1 Kings 6:12-13
In the middle of the construction, God interrupts to say what the building is worth without obedience: nothing. The promise to David holds “if thou wilt walk in my statutes.” A temple is a place for God to dwell only as long as the people He dwells among keep faith with Him. The gold on the walls does not secure the presence; the covenant does.
So Was He Seven Years In Building It
“And in the eleventh year, in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.”
1 Kings 6:38
Seven years for the house of God. Then chapter 7 opens: “But Solomon was building his own house thirteen years.” The word “but” is the narrator’s, and it is pointed. Nearly twice the time, and more of it, went into the palace complex — the House of the Forest of Lebanon, the hall of judgment, a separate house for Pharaoh’s daughter. It is the first quiet hint that the king’s priorities are drifting from the LORD’s house toward his own.
So Was Ended All The Work
“And king Solomon sent and fetched Hiram out of Tyre. He was a widow’s son of the tribe of Naphtali… and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass… So was ended all the work that king Solomon made for the house of the LORD. And Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated; even the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, did he put among the treasures of the house of the LORD.”
1 Kings 7:13-51
The master craftsman is another Hiram — a half-Israelite from Tyre “filled with wisdom, and understanding” for metalwork (the same words used of Bezalel at the tabernacle, Exodus 31:3). The two great bronze pillars, the molten sea on twelve oxen, the lampstands, the vessels — all cast in the clay ground of the Jordan valley. When it is finished, Solomon adds the treasure David had set aside his whole life. Two generations’ work, one house.
