For forty days a nine-foot Philistine has come out morning and evening to dare Israel to send a man, and the whole army — king included — is “dismayed, and greatly afraid.” A shepherd boy on an errand to bring his brothers bread hears the taunt and is offended for God: “who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” He turns down the king’s armour, picks up five stones, and walks out saying the line the chapter is built on: the battle is the LORD’s.

I Defy The Armies Of Israel This Day
“And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid… And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.”
1 Samuel 17:10-16
Goliath does the same thing twice a day for nearly six weeks, and it works: an entire trained army, with a king who was chosen for his height, is paralysed by one loud man. Fear, given a routine, becomes a way of life. Nobody in the camp asks the question David asks the moment he arrives — not “how big is he?” but “who is he, to defy the living God?”
The LORD That Delivered Me Out Of The Paw Of The Lion
“Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear… The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”
1 Samuel 17:36-37
Eliab sneers at his little brother — “I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart” — the same jealousy that will keep failing him. But David’s confidence is not bravado; it is memory. Alone on the hills he had fought a lion and a bear with a staff, and God had brought him through. Those years alone with the sheep, Ellen White says, were God preparing the son of Jesse for exactly this. Courage now is built on rescues then.

I Cannot Go With These
“And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook… and his sling was in his hand.”
1 Samuel 17:39-40
Saul’s answer to a giant is a bigger suit of armour — his own. David can barely walk in it: “I have not proved them.” He goes with what he has tested in real fights — a staff, a sling, five stones from the streambed. God does not need His servant kitted out to look the part. He needs him using what has already been proven in the small, unwatched battles.
The Battle Belongs To The LORD
“Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts… that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s.”
1 Samuel 17:45-47
David states the terms out loud so both armies hear: Goliath brings iron; David brings the name of the LORD. And he names the purpose — not his own reputation, but “that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.” One stone, and the giant falls like a felled tree. The lesson is not that faith makes a person invincible; it is that “the LORD saveth not with sword and spear,” and never did.
