Midian is broken, and Gideon comes out of it at his best and his worst in the same chapter. He turns away a jealous quarrel with Ephraim with a soft answer. He chases the last Midianite kings across the Jordan, “faint, yet pursuing.” He refuses a crown with exactly the right words: the LORD shall rule over you. And then he asks for the gold, makes a golden ephod, and the man who pulled down one idol has built the next.

The Gleaning Of The Grapes Of Ephraim
“And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison of you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abi-ezer?… Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.”
Judges 8:2-3
Ephraim shows up after the battle to complain it was not invited. Gideon could have answered pride with pride; instead he shrinks his own part and enlarges theirs — your leftovers beat our whole harvest. It is “a soft answer” that “turneth away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1) in action, and it keeps a jealous squabble from becoming a civil war. A man can be a “mighty man of valour” and still choose not to win an argument.
“The spirit of jealousy might easily have been fanned into a quarrel that would have caused strife and bloodshed; but Gideon’s modest answer soothed the anger of the men of Ephraim… Gideon displayed also a spirit of courtesy that is rarely witnessed.”

Faint, Yet Pursuing
“And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them.”
Judges 8:4
Three words that have outlived the battle they describe: faint, yet pursuing. The three hundred are spent — and they keep going. The towns of Succoth and Penuel refuse them even bread on the way, betting Gideon will lose. He does not. The victory is not finished at the moment of triumph; it is finished by tired men who will not stop short.
The LORD Shall Rule Over You
“Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also… And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you.”
Judges 8:22-23
Israel offers Gideon a hereditary throne, and he gives the answer the whole nation should have known already: God is the king. To crown a man would be to depose their real Sovereign — the same rejection Israel would make explicit generations later when it demanded a king “like all the nations” (1 Samuel 8:5). Gideon sees it clearly and says no. It is the high point of his life.
“This proposition was in direct violation of the principles of the theocracy. God was the king of Israel, and for them to place a man upon the throne would be a rejection of their Divine Sovereign. Gideon recognized this fact.”

Which Thing Became A Snare
“And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.”
Judges 8:27
Then the fall. He asks each soldier for a gold earring from the plunder, gathers a fortune, and fashions an ephod — priestly gear — and sets it up in his home town. He may have meant it as a memorial; Israel treated it as a shrine, and “went a whoring after it.” The man who obeyed God by night to smash one idol, in his idle years builds another with his own hands. As soon as he dies the nation is back to Baal (verse 33). A leader’s worst mistake outlasts him.
