Israel never meets Balak king of Moab in battle. The whole confrontation happens on a hilltop, out of sight of the camp, between a frightened king and a prophet-for-hire he has brought in from the Euphrates to curse the people God has blessed. Four times Balaam opens his mouth to curse, and four times blessing comes out — the last time as a prophecy of the Messiah. And a donkey sees more clearly than the seer.

Thou Shalt Not Curse The People: For They Are Blessed
“And God said unto Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they are blessed.”
Numbers 22:12
Balak is terrified of a nation he has watched flatten two kingdoms, so he reaches for spiritual weapons. God’s reply to the first delegation is complete: do not go, do not curse, they are blessed. That last clause settles the entire book. A people God has blessed cannot be un-blessed by anyone with a fee.
I Cannot Go Beyond The Word Of The LORD
“If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.”
Numbers 22:18
The words are impeccable; the heart is not. Balaam keeps asking God for permission he has already been refused, hoping for a different answer, because the reward is enormous. When God finally says “go” — a permission that is really a judgement — Balaam saddles up eagerly. Peter’s verdict is blunt: he “loved the wages of unrighteousness” (2 Peter 2:15).
The LORD Opened The Mouth Of The Ass
“Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand… And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me.”
Numbers 22:31-32
The donkey sees the drawn sword three times and saves Balaam’s life by refusing to go forward; Balaam, “the man whose eyes are open,” sees nothing and beats her for it. The professional seer is blinder than his mount. It is a small comedy with a hard point: a man can have the vocabulary of a prophet and be spiritually sightless, led by greed straight past the angel of God.

How Shall I Curse, Whom God Hath Not Cursed
“How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied?… God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent… Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.”
Numbers 23:8, 19-20
Balak keeps moving Balaam to a new hilltop, as if a better view will change the outcome, and builds seven altars each time. It makes no difference. The blessing on Israel is not a mood God is in; it is a commitment He has made, and “God is not a man, that he should lie.” A hired mouth has no leverage against that.
There Shall Come A Star Out Of Jacob
“How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!… I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel.”
Numbers 24:5, 17
The last oracle overflows the assignment entirely. A pagan diviner, standing over Israel to curse it, ends up prophesying the Messiah — a Star and a Sceptre out of Jacob. Centuries later, wise men from the same eastern country will follow a star to a King of the Jews (Matthew 2). God can put His truth in an unwilling mouth. What Balaam could not accomplish with a curse, though, he manages a chapter later with a piece of advice — and that is the next study.
