1 Peter

The First Epistle of Peter was written by the fisherman whom Jesus called to be a fisher of men, the disciple who walked on the water and sank, who confessed “Thou art the Christ” and then denied Him three times, and whom the risen Lord restored by the Sea of Galilee with the words, “Feed my sheep.” Now an old man, writing from “Babylon” (almost certainly Rome) with the help of Silvanus and with Mark at his side, he sends this letter “to the strangers scattered” through Asia Minor — believers facing slander and persecution for the name of Christ.

This series reads 1 Peter chapter by chapter, following this site’s study of James. It is a letter of hope under suffering: a “lively hope” through the resurrection, an inheritance “reserved in heaven,” a faith tried in the fire like gold, and the call to follow Christ, who suffered for us, “leaving us an example.” And it holds one of the great statements of who God’s people are: “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people.”
