2 Timothy

2 Timothy is the last letter Paul ever wrote. He was no longer under the comfortable house arrest of Acts 28. Arrested again after a few years of freedom, he was now held in a Roman dungeon during Nero’s persecution, abandoned by most of his friends, and certain he would soon be executed. From there he wrote to Timothy, his “dearly beloved son,” asking him to come quickly before winter and bring his cloak and his books. It is a letter of farewell, and a handing on of the torch.

This series reads 2 Timothy chapter by chapter, immediately after this site’s study of 1 Timothy — the second pastoral letter and the eleventh epistle on the site. Its four chapters hold some of the best-loved words in Scripture: God hath not given us the spirit of fear; study to shew thyself approved unto God; all scripture is given by inspiration of God; preach the word; and Paul’s own last testimony, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”
