James
The Epistle of James was written by “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,” almost certainly the James whom Paul calls “the Lord’s brother” (Galatians 1:19), the leader of the church in Jerusalem who presided at the council of Acts 15. He did not believe in Jesus during His ministry (John 7:5), but the risen Christ appeared to him (1 Corinthians 15:7), and he became one of the pillars of the church. His letter, addressed “to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad,” reads like a collection of sermons, and it echoes the Sermon on the Mount more than any other New Testament book.
This series reads James chapter by chapter, following this site’s study of Hebrews. It is the most practical book in the New Testament: be doers of the word, and not hearers only; faith without works is dead; the tongue is a fire; draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. It speaks plainly about God’s law, “the perfect law of liberty,” and it closes with the picture this page’s painting was chosen for: the husbandman waiting patiently for the early and latter rain, until the coming of the Lord.
