1 John

The First Epistle of John was written by “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” the fisherman who had leaned on the Saviour’s breast at the Last Supper and stood at the foot of the cross. By now he was an old man, the last of the twelve, caring for the churches of Asia. He writes as a witness: “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you.” And he writes as a father to his “little children,” guarding them against teachers who denied that “Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.”

This series reads 1 John chapter by chapter, following this site’s study of 2 Peter. The letter circles around three great words: God is light, God is love, and God has given us eternal life in His Son. Along the way it gives some of Scripture’s clearest statements on confession and forgiveness, on Christ our “advocate with the Father,” on sin as “the transgression of the law,” and on the assurance of the believer: “He that hath the Son hath life.”
