2 Peter

The Second Epistle of Peter is the apostle’s last testament. He knows that “shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me,” and he writes so that after his death the believers will “have these things always in remembrance.” The old fisherman looks back to the night on the holy mount when he was an eyewitness of Christ’s majesty, and forward to the day when “the heavens shall pass away with a great noise” and God’s people will inherit “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”

This series reads 2 Peter chapter by chapter, following this site’s study of 1 Peter. Where the first letter strengthened the church against persecution from outside, this one guards it against corruption from within: false teachers who deny the Lord that bought them, and scoffers who ask, “Where is the promise of his coming?” Peter’s answer is growth in grace, a “more sure word of prophecy,” and a life of holy expectation, “looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God.”
