You cannot be forgiven, until you truly repent of your sins! And you cannot truly repent of your sins without first understanding how much God loves you! Repenting is what you do first, when you accept God’s love for you! But this is NOT where the process stops!
God also wants to save you “from your sins”, NOT “in your sins”! The process of God removing your sins from your life is called “sanctification”. The word “sanctify” means “to make holy”! So, it is God who does the work on your character! A sinner cannot make anything holy! Only God can do that!
"Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you".
Exodus 31:13 KJV
You still have a part to play in this process, however, and that is to surrender your will to God! In the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed, “If it be possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not My will but Thine be done”! This needs to be our own attitude toward our Heavenly Father as well!
Our own will is sinful and selfish and this makes it “unsafe to follow”! Instead, we need to daily choose to do God’s will rather than our own will! This is the ONLY safe and sure pathway!
Remember that Forgiveness And Repentance are terms related to your relationship with God. So they also describe an on going intimate relationship with God! God’s desire is to “reshape” your character to match His character!
