Nearer Still Nearer (#301)

Another Resource: Author: Mrs. C. H. Morris

If you have not already realized it, this song is a love song! It reminds me of the contents of Song Of Solomon!

Nearer, still nearer, close to Thy heart,
Draw me, my Savior, so precious Thou art;
Fold me, O fold me close to Thy breast,
Shelter me safe in that haven of rest,
Shelter me safe in that haven of rest.

“Draw me” really means “show me Your Love”! The entire first verse is a desperate plea to be as intimate as you can be with Jesus Christ!

Nearer, still nearer, nothing I bring,
Nought as an offering to Jesus my King-
Only my sinful now contrite heart,
Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart,
Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart.

This verse reminds me of Queen Esther when she first approached the king without an invitation! She had no jewelry on, but she had made herself as attractive as she could, and she gave herself as a “gift” to the king, with complete humility! Her actions demonstrated a deep love for the king, because she was willing to die for his companionship! Had the king not extended his scepter to her, her head would have been immediately removed!

Nearer, still nearer, Lord, to be Thine;
Sin, with its follies, I gladly resign,
All of its pleasures, pomp and its pride;
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified,
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified.

This verse is a solemn and heartfelt prayer to “belong to Christ”! And the only object considered to have any value is the love of Christ for you! This means you have a willingness to give up everything else, including your favorite sins!

Nearer, still nearer, while life shall last;
Till safe in glory my anchor is cast;
Through endless ages, ever to be,
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee,
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee.

This verse reiterates that the only thing of value to you is “intimacy with Christ”! Even though you are “safe in glory”, the only thing that matters is being near to your Savior! And it is also a commitment to be near to Him in this life…now!
