Only a handful of the sixty-six books are prophetic books in the strict sense. The rest are law, history, poetry, gospel and letter — and that is where most of the Bible actually lives.
The division is a convenience, not a wall. A book does not have to be a prophetic book to carry prophecy. The first promise of a Redeemer arrives in Genesis 3:15, four chapters into Scripture and long before there was a prophet around to write it down. So a study of Genesis belongs here, and the prophecy inside it still counts — and Exodus for the same reason, its Passover lamb and pillar of fire and sanctuary all prophecy in the form of history; and Leviticus, whose every offering and holy day is a diagram of the cross and the priestly work that follows it; and Numbers, whose lifted serpent the Lord Himself made the picture of His own crucifixion; and Deuteronomy, which set life and death before a people and told them to choose; and Joshua, whose leader bears the name Jesus and brings a people into the rest that Hebrews says still remains; and Judges, where a people with no king did what was right in its own eyes, and God kept sending rescue anyway; and Ruth, where that same grim age yields one quiet love story that runs straight to David — and to Christ; and 1 Samuel, which raises up a prophet, gives Israel the king it demanded, and anoints the shepherd it did not ask for; and 2 Samuel, David’s forty years on the throne — the covenant, the great sin, and the son who nearly took the kingdom from him; and 1 Kings, from Solomon’s temple to the split of the kingdom and Elijah’s stand against Ahab; and 2 Kings, from Elijah’s chariot of fire to the fall of Samaria and the burning of Jerusalem; and 1 Chronicles, which retells the story from Adam to David’s death with an eye fixed on the temple and the worship of the LORD.
