The Sin Underneath All Sins
One of the most influential Christian reformers, Martin Luther, once said, “the sin underneath all sins is to trust the lie of the serpent, that we cannot trust the love and grace of Christ and must take matters into our own hands.”
A Terrible Tragedy!
Unfortunately, the Bible tells us that this is just what Eve did. She took of the fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with and he ate. Thus, the world was forever changed. Mankind had fallen into the trap of the devil and now God’s beautiful new creation was in serious need of rescue.
O Love That Will Not Let Me Go (New And Different Words)
Verse 1
The fall of man how deep and great.
How sad and wretched is his state.
God's image in his soul effaced.
To all reproach and shame abased.
Reproach and shame abased!
Verse 2
Poor helpless creature in his blood?
Yet lives at enmity with God!
To God and all his ways estranged.
Until his heart by Grace is changed.
His heart by Grace is changed!
Verse 3
God's love and grace to you abounds,
How sweet his invitation sounds.
Come unto me ye helpless poor,
Your health and life will I restore,
Your health and life restore.
Amen.
As a result of their decision, Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden and made to face the results of their disobedience. But our loving Heavenly Father did not abandon them.
In fact, as he led them out of the Garden Paradise, he cursed the snake and he said, I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed, he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.
This idea that one of Eve’s descendants would crush the head of the serpent revealed to them a coming deliverer who would end the career of Satan. But how long would they have to wait? And who would be that descendant who would rescue them from the serpent?
